Christmas Traditions in Italy |
|
Christmas celebrations continue in Italy for three weeks. Children recite Christmas poems by visiting house to house. There are a few places in Italy where shepherds carry musical instruments to different villages. Before Christmas Eve, a feast is observed for approximately 24 hours. This feast is followed by a great Christmas meal. This is comprised of light Milanese cake, which is also known as panettone. Until epiphany, children have to wait for their Christmas gifts.
According to tradition, an ugly and kindhearted witch distributes beautiful Christmas gifts among children. Befana is the name of witch and she rides on a broomstick.
